Mexico offers a plethora of common materials to incorporate into pieces — cardboard, wire, metal, wood, plastic, packaging, and so on. Some of these materials I find in the streets, some in the markets. I’m drawn to these things not only because they often have beautiful shapes, patinas, lettering, etc., but because they are utilitarian and have a particular history attached to them — a history that can only be guessed at. As such they are imbued with character and a kind of mystery that I find compelling.
