Working in three dimensions has opened up many interesting avenues of exploration, including considerations of space, materials, and scale. Included here are an ongoing series of boxes, which I term “boxitechture.” My father enjoyed collecting small antique wood boxes, admiring fine joinery in particular. My own carpentry skills preclude anything approaching the craftsmanship he would admire, but I’m drawn to making them anyway as an almost primal (and allegorical) form. My challenge to myself is to make box pieces that don’t echo Joseph Cornell’s too much, although most anyone engaged in box work is hugely indebted to him, myself certainly included.
